"Bumpy" U.S.-China Relationship

http://www.cfr.org/china/bumpy-us-chinese-relationship/p28126

The U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue is currently in progress while tensions were rising over the case of human rights activist Chen Guangcheng. Even though the U.S. and China have growing economic ties, the relationship of the countries is heading into a "bumpy period", according to CFR China expert Adam Segal. One of these stress points are from China's territorial claims in the South China Sea. Another difference in opinion is how to handle Iran and North Korea since there are nuclear threats from those countries. The two sides recently came to an agreement in the Guangcheng case, which is a step closer to solving the problems between them. This agreement was a surprising outcome and both sides are happy to not have the issue drag on.

I think the agreement in the Guangcheng case was a small step forward to keep tensions lower. The real issues between the U.S. and China is the difference in opinion on how to handle North Korea and Iran. I think the U.S. should not really care about what China thinks about the situation and keep civilians out of harms way because that is most important. Keeping North Korea or Iran from using nuclear missiles could keep us and other countries from going into a war that is not needed. The problem with North Korea is that they keep everything in seclusion and don't tell any countries what they are going to do. I think if China was smart, they would side with the U.S. and stop North Korea and Iran's nuclear programs.

  1. I agree. Its really kind of amazing that we bother with the little things like this journalist - even to the point where it gets in the way of these much larger issues.

  2. The U.S. and China could never go to war. If we did, both countries economies would virtually collapse. We would be in utter ruins. The U.S. needs to stay absolutely friendly with China in order to keep our economic ties in order. The only problem I see with the China, is the fact that they are still North Korea's closest ally. In fact, many of the countries we hate, are allies with China. This is somewhat disturbing, given the fact that North Korea and Iran, who want their hands on nuclear weapons, are allies with a superpower like China. On those issues, we should try to persuade China to be against nuclear weapons. I think we are doing a good job of that as well.
