The Washington Capitals Joel Ward, who is African-American has recently been caught in a racist battle with fans. Ward who has recently become a NHL Playoff hero for Washington has had an unforgivable display of intense public racism that many had hoped couldn't possibly take place anymore from fans. Hockey fans have been posting their racist language for the whole world to see, with some referring to hockey as a "white man's game" and telling Ward to "go play basketball". Ward isn't letting it get to him, saying that the racist tweets "Didn't ruin my day". Now the NHL has decisions to deal with this racism taking place on the ice-rink.
In my opinion, It makes me disappointed and angry that some hockey fans showed their anger by tweeting about how Joel Ward is black and is playing hockey. The game of hockey is being played by more different races today as we speak. Hockey is becoming a huge international sport. Joel Ward is becoming a huge star in the NHL, so we should not let racist fans stop him from doing so. The NHL needs to take action of these racist fans and tweets for the sake of the league. We have yet to see the NHL take action on concussions, head shots, or fighting so perhaps if Gary Bettman, and company decide that stamping out racism isn't on their agenda it's time to seriously question the leadership of hockey's most prominent league. Changes must be made.
A lot of people would say that this problem stems from a lack of diversity within the NHL. While a lack of diversity certainly gave them the basis for their racism, it was ultimately the players who chose to be racist. I hate this racist phenomenon just as much as the next person, but it is ultimately up to the NHL to stop drafting people based on ethnicity.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me angry that some hockey fans showed their anger by tweeting about a black person who is playing hockey. I don't think that hockey should discriminate against anyone and should be a sport for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree that changes need to be made if this racism is going to continue. People need to realize that he is a good enough player to be in the NHL so he should be treated the same. Even though the majority of the hockey players are white, the game is changing and people need to realize that. I feel as if Joel Ward will continue to be a star and fans will enjoy how he plays and what he does to help the game.
ReplyDeleteI believe that you can play any sport you want to play no matter what your race is. This is America right, so you have the freedom to do as you please as long as it doesn't break the law. It's a shame to see what people believe sports are for everyone to play they shouldn't be leaning towards a particular race.
ReplyDeleteWow...Who knew Hockey could become racist. There are many teams that have different races. So what if Ward is black, I bet he plays better then some of the white hockey players.
