In 1992, Armenian forces massacred the Azeris citizens of the Turkish town of Khojaly. This massacre marked another bloody day in the Nagorao-Karabakh War. Instead of owning up to its history, Armenia refuses to agknowledge that the massacre ever happened, allowing Turkey to deny Armenian genocide. On Sunday, February 26th, Turkish nationalists gathered to commerate the massacre. The gathering soon turned violent against the Armenians. Two days later, The Human Rights Association Istanbul branch brought a complaint against the demonstrators at the commeration saying that the speeches made at the gathering as well as the slogans chanted and the signs carried held speech that would "humiliate others who have suffered extensively and attack their ethnic identity" instead of honouring those who died at the massacre. The IHD called for an investigation into the gathering and the speakers there under Turkish law.
I have learned a few things about racism over the course of this quarter. One, racism still exists in our world today. This might seem obvious, but I was suprised at the extent that racism exists today. And not just in America, but all over the world. Two, I learned that no one seems to be doing much about racism. Organizations all over the world cry out every week about an act of racism, but no one, organization or citizens, seems to want to step up and be the one to say they are tired of racism and are prepared to do anything about it. Finally, I learned there is more to racism than just colour of one's skin. Many people, in India for example, are treated wrongly just by being born in a certain city or to certain people. Even in modern England, there is still a class system that is nearly impossible to overcome.
10 good stuff this term!
