Over the past weekend, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) formally endorsed former Massachusetts governor and GOP front runner Mitt Romney. This is a big endorsement for Gov. Romney because Ryan is a well-known Republican congressman who has been popular lately in the past year because of his proposed Ryan Budget, which would make cuts in the government to reduce the debt. He is also the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee. Ryan endorsed Gov. Romney at an event at a Wisconsin fish fry in Serb Hall in front of a crowd of around 100 people. This comes just days before Wisconsin holds its contest for the GOP nomination. Recent polls show Romney with a 5-10 point lead over Rick Santorum, with Ron Paul in 3rd and Newt Gingrich in last.
I think this is another blow to the other candidate's campaigns and a boost to the Romney camp. Paul Ryan is very popular among conservatives and surprisingly not an enemy of the liberals after a liberal publication named him one of the rising stars in politics in 2011. This comes along with President George H.W. Bush's endorsement of Romney just a couple days before. I expect to see a Romney win in Wisconsin, Maryland, and our nation's capital tomorrow night on Tuesday and the Romney rally continuing into Tampa for the national convention on August 27th. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a Romney/Paul ticket into the White House if Romney secures the nomination for the general election since it would grab in the anti-Romney voters as they see Paul Ryan as a new generation conservative instead of Romney being seen as a moderate.
