MC. Donald's released an add for chicken nuggets saying what was more risky, "Trying a brand-new menu item at McDonald's isn't risky. You know what's risky? Petting a stray pit bull. Or shaving your head just to see how it would look ... that's risky. Naming your son 'Sue' -- super risky. Giving your friends your Facebook password? Ultra-risky!". Pit Bull lovers were outraged, going to Facebook and twitter they started twittingAbout the add and saying how it was horrible to say that. Pit Bull Lovers started a Facebook page called "Pit Bull's Against MC. Donald's". the spokes women for the MC. Donald's advertisement took the add off the market due to the backlash of this Pit Bull add. The add only ran for a few hours in Kansas City before the complaints started rolling in on the air.
I believe that MC. Donald's should be punished more for the fact of stating that all pit Bulls are naturally vicious. The Add for MC. Donald's shouldn't have even aired because of the backlash they were going to get. The commercial says that its risky to pet a stray pit bull. Well if your smart enough to eat at MC. Donald's then your smart enough to know that even though pit bulls are said to be the Vicious breed, their really not. the whole problem with pit bulls being vicious is how they are raised, and treated through out their lives.
It was an overgeneralization on McDonald's part, but they have freedom of speech. If pitbull owners boycott McDonald's, then that's their rightful punishment. What the advertisement was expressing was freedom of speech, and I highly doubt that pit bulls are protected by slander or libel laws.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with you kelsey on that one, I believe that McDonalds has the right to say what they want. If the pitbull owners want to stop eating at McDonalds, they can do so because McDonalds is the biggest fast food restaurant in America. So I believe that McDonalds should not be punished although I do however believe that they should have used a different analogy.
ReplyDeleteI dont think its that big of a deal that they said anything about a pitbull.. Plus they said it was stray, I wouldnt trust any stray dog! I think the "dog lovers" blew it out of proportion. Maybe McDonalds should just watch what they say more closely next time, but I definitely dont find it as that bad of a comment!
ReplyDeleteI kinda get where your coming from, yes people who own pit bull might be offended. But everyone else most likely didn't give it a second thought when they say the add. And I'm sure that McDonald's didn't mean to make it come across this was in the first place. What was said has been said. People can think and say as they please in this case.
ReplyDeleteNice discussion - I have a boxer. Similarly ignorant people mix her up with pit bulls and freak about her sitting seemingly free on our front porch. Sometimes the stupidity of the speech results in its own fair consequences.
ReplyDeleteI also somewhat disagree. It may have offended a few people but it is not worth legal action by any means.
