North Korean Update: Japan

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20120319-700796.html

This article talks about the Japanese retaliation to North Korea's upcoming satellite launch. Japan's Defense Minister Naoki Tanaka has stated he is prepared to shoot down any ballistic missile that could pose a threat to Japan. The satellite launch by North Korea is supposed to happen mid-April, but it is still unsure how threatening this launch will be. Japan has already alerted it's Navy to be ready for action if any threat against Japanese territories are made by North Korea.

I think it's a good thing Japan is willing to defend nations in the area against threats like this. I feel as though sometimes the U.N., the U.S. in particular, are to nice when it comes to North Korea. Japan does not seem to be as easy-going as other nations though, and are taking a strong stand against something like this satellite launch. If Japan is threatened, I think shooting down the missile would be a strong statement in showing that North Korea is not as powerful as they think. How North Korea would retaliate to this is the area of concern. They would certainly be frustrated, but it is still unclear whether or not they would physically retaliate in some sort of attack.

  1. Makes sense they will shoot it down if threatened. Necessary to state so in advance so as to 1 hopefully deter a launch too close and 2 keep them from being painted the bad guys if they try, miss and hit something more important... I agree with you on US being too nice... but it is always easy to criticize but I admit I don't know - do what...
