The Syrian government has finally "officially" accepted the terms of the ceasefire and starting April 10, they will begin a six-point peace plan. Violence has continued despite the initial proposal of a ceasefire, so the question remains whether any change will actually happen. The plan includes things such as a UN-supervised end to violence from both sides, daily aid to those affected by the crisis, and ensured freedom of journalists. The U.S. is still skeptical as to if all or any of the Syrian government's promises will in fact be kept. The true test will be when the deadline of April 10 approaches, and if any action is taken at all.
I'm extremely skeptical of the Syrian government's promises, as it is not that stable right now and they have broken previous promises to end the conflict. Still, it brings hope that one day soon the people and the government will be able to work through their problems peacefully. The question also remains not only if the government will stop fighting, but if the people will stop their attacks and protests, peace can only come if it is from both sides. I will have to keep on the lookout, especially next week, for any further advancement regarding the peace talks.
News Sunday is U.S. calling Syria out on pretending to withdraw - kind of warning them that we are watching (satellite photos through the AP wire and everything). IT will be interesting what happens after the deadline.
