This article sheds the light on the many gulag's North Korea is hiding throughout the mountain chain. A gulag is a forced labor camp where political prisoners are sent for punishment. These gulag's are not like a sweatshop however, forced abortions, torture, and public executions occur daily at these places. As many as 15,000 political prisoners are believed to be working at these camps. Anyone is subject to being taken here, even for something as little as singing a South Korean song, which is what one woman did. Even for having relatives in South Korea or Japan, one could be subject to an arrest.
I think we always knew gulag's were present in North Korea, but I think we try to ignore it. We try to be as nice and peaceful to North Korea so any hostilities between us can stay quiet. But these gulag's are something out of Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany. It is completely unbelievable that this can still occur, but with a nation like North Korea, maybe it's not so crazy. I do not think we should completely ignore the fact that public executions, constant torture, and forced abortions occur, but I do not think we should completely liberate these camps using forces. I don't know what we should do. North Korea is such a sensitive country, anything we do could spark a violent engagement. But somehow, we need to find a way to let those 15,000 people free.
