Problems in diamond mines

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15842524/ns/world_news/t/diamonds-journey-grim-reality-tarnishes-glitter/
What this article say is that the people in Africa, are being treated like crap and slaves for their own country. Not only is the adults being used but kids are being used to help find the diamonds. They say that the search is not easy, more than enough people have lost their lives searching for a diamond. the major problem that really have is using the kids to find the diamonds. people caught with a diamond they didn't give to the lead well be shot or a limb well be cut off.

  1. This has been going on for a very long time. Hopefully one day it will end. And hopefully that day comes soon. I can tell you that any time I buy jewelry, I will be sure that it came from a place where the workers are treated like humans. We all have to take it upon ourselves to do that, no matter how much extra we have to pay because of it.

  2. This is terrible! I find it almost unbearable to hear that children are being used as slaves because I am still a kid and that could be happening to me if I were in Africa. Is there any way that we could stop these people and make it into a legit business where the workers get paid?

  3. if you read this article all the way to the end, there is some interesting information about the post colony overnment working with the diamond industry, namely debeers in improving conditions/ labor laws and even using the diamond wealth to provide free retroviral meds for aids patients and free education for children. There is progress beiing made in some places.
