In Brazil animal breeding and the exotic trade is becoming amzingly high. The highest amount of exotic trade goes on in the state of Santa Catarina, located in southern Brazil. The highest species of animal breed and traded in this state is tropical birds, mostly native to the Amazon Rain Forest. Since 2008, IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources)  has learned of 79 wildlife breeders and 11 wildlife traders in Santa Catarina, 51% of all breeding in the area is through commercial breeding. IBAMA has learned that 213 species of animals are breed within the state, having 48% of them being native to Santa Catarina, 32% being in the country of Brazil, and 20% of them exotic to Brazil. Now they are cracking down on breeders that are breeding unauthorized or endangered species.

I think it is good that in countries where their is a high rate of exotic trade that they are finally starting to crack down on them. I would guess that many of these animals come from the Amazon Rain Forest and are endangered. I not going to say that the breeders are all bad, some might even be trying to breed them to get their numbers back up. But I do not like the idea that they are being sold as pets by traders. It does shock me though to find out that 213 animals are being breed in one state, it makes me think how many animals are being breed thoroughout Brazil as a whole. It does make me a whole lot better though to know that IBAMA are out their stopping the trading/breeding.

I believe this website to be from Brazil because in almost every other paragraph it is resaid in spanish. The way the author writes it makes it sound like he has experiece in the places and how their laws work. Also I went to the home page and found the about us colum and everything it had on their was coming out of Brazil, like when it was made and how long the journal has been going for. Also that most of the sponsors are Brazilian in orgin and most of the copyright and index is in spanish. Also it tells me where the publishing  is coming out of and what company it is.

  1. I did not realize that Brazil was such a big source for animal trading. It is a good thing that they are getting a handle on animal trafficking though. Many of the animals that are taken can end up in America where people do not know how to properly care for them. I watch a show on Discovery once where snakes that are not native to America are thriving in the everglades. The snakes do not have any predators to they end up multiplying and wiping out native species. Finally I agree that it is a good thing that countries are cracking down on the exotic trade.
