Coca Clearers Face Landmind Danger- Brandon Labath

Increasing number of people employed by the Colombian government to clear coca crops are being killed by landminds. These landminds are mostly planted by Colombia's drug-running rebal groups around coca fields. They plant these to protect the valuable product. Columbia is coming up with better ways to look out for these minds by training rats, dogs and other animals. Since 1982, almost 9,000 Colombians including civilians have been killed by landminds.

  2. I think it is kind of smart to plant landmines in the cocoa fields but yet risky for when they want to go pick the plants. Also when a mine goes off, won't it set off others that will kill the cocoa plants? I can see sending rats out in the fields, but why risk a dogs life, they are just as important as humans. 9,000 is an unbelievable amount of deaths for just landmines.

  3. Why don't they make a technology that can detect landmines? I mean it is pretty smart but extremely inhumane for them to do that. How many landmines do they have in the coca crop fields?
