This article goes into meticulous depth about the various measures taken by the Cambodian people and government to remove and prevent landmines. First of all, it's important to note that landmines are now banned in Cambodia. Also, the government has hired a workforce to remove mines throughout the nation. However, this process is slow, and many villagers have turned to hiring their own unlicensed de-miners. This practice is illegal, but the government does not enforce it very well.
II applaud the villagers for taking it upon theirselves to remove the deadly mines that hamper every day of their lives. It's understandable that the government wants to keep people safe by not allowing them to attempt to remove mines, but I think that people should have a right to go and do this is they want to. It's none of the government's business.
I think that if we put most of the mines there, we should help them take care of business. Lets just send over a few minesweepers and get the job done. We need to show we are willing to clean up our mess and call it a done deal.
