The End of Mines

http://www.landmines.org/Page.aspx?pid=374

The UNA and the USA has finished their Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign (AAM). The program was able to raise $25 million in the ten years it was around. Also AAM has cleared over 1,000 minefeilds and helped thousands of survivors. Thanks to their work, their are only 6,000 casualties a year compared to the 25,000 in past years. 156 countries have signed the Mine Ban Treaty, almost 80% of the world's nations. Now their are only two countries that still have and use landmines.

  1. and this is obviously for that assignment. what two countries? I think U.S. is one, and we also haven't signed the ban treaty.

  2. I think the AAM has done a great job with the mine program. They have saved lots of lives by getting rid of minefields and helping survivors survive. The casualty rate has shot down by 19,000 a year which is great. I think the two countries that haven't would have to be the U.S. and Mexico.

  3. How about adopt-a-child-amputee-victim instead of adopting minefields? While landmines may be banned, there's still the issue of currently active landmines and their victims that need to be resolved.

  4. What is the UNA? And does the ban of mines matter that much right now compared to the amount of mines there already are? Obviously, it's a step in the right direction, but we should work on removing the ones that are already there to ensure future citizen safety.

  5. I think it is great that so many people and countries have put forth an effort to stop land mines, and help those who were affected. But also a comment to Prestons. I don't think he really thought the whole adopt-a-child-amputee-victim thing through. Just because you lose a limb does not mean you have no family, or they are going to disown you. Regardless other then just banning land mines I think we should all be working together to fully rid the world of them.
