The endangered Vaquita

The Vaquita is one of the smallest sea mammals in the world, cousin to the dolphin and porpoise . Living in the Gulf of California, less than three hundred of these creatures exist. These creatures are endangered and on the verge of extinction do to fishing nets, which they get entangled in; as well as through the damming of the Colorado River. Both researchers from America and Mexico are studying these creatures in hopes of helping to find new ways to keep these creatures alive. Now these scientists are testing new fishing equipment that will help save these animals when and if caught in them.

From what I have learned of the Vaquita they are a very gentle raise. They resemble dolphins in both appearance and attitude. I feel very bad that their small territory is being used as fishing lanes. I mean for a Vaquita, or any other sea creature, seeing a bunch of fish caught in fishing nets is like a giant buffet for them. But then they not knowing they can get trapped in the fishing net, or knowing what it is at all, ends up killing them because they are not able to move constantly and start to not breathe.

It brings me joy to hear that we are helping to save these animals form extinction. So many of our worlds animals go unhelped by man; leading to their eventual extinction. Sea creatures are one of the most beings in the animal kingdom under siege of going extinct do to fishing nets, fishing in general, and pollution. I'm happy that two countries that have so many problems of their own to deal with can take time out to join forces and help save these wonderful sea creatures. Now all we need to do is working on saving our worlds other sea creatures, like whales and sharks.
