Germany-Racism

http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,666317,00.html

A report published on Wednesday by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights found that racism is just as prevent in Europe as it was eighty years ago. A survey found that one in three Roma and Middle Eastern immigrants still face day to day discrimination based on their ethnicity. Eighty-two percent also reported that they do not report their issues to the police. The countries with the highest levels of discrimination against the Roma were the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Greece. Africans found the most discrimination in Ireland and Italy. According to the report, one in four from various minority groups faced some sort of violence in the past year.

This scares me not only because Europe is suppose to be one of the more modern continents in the world, but because I was born there and I visit frequently. Even though racism is just as prevalent in America, this report hits home just a little more than the other topics I have posted on. Something needs to be done about this before more people get hurt. I hope this report makes countries realize, especially the ones listed in the article, realize that something needs to be done.

  1. This article does surprise me a little bit. I've always thought of Europe to be not quite as racist as the U.S is. To me is just seems like they don't really have an issue with it, but I guess I'm wrong. It doesn't surprise me though that no one reports it to the police. I mean even if they did what honestly would be done..? Probably nothing. That's the pity with the law enforcement, they only focus on the issues relevant to them. Also this discrimination they are facing is it mostly just verbal and small other things, or are they like actual hate crimes?
