I do not think that the charging of electric cars gives off much carbon at all. I think that all electric cars would do is help the environment. The alternative to gasoline and oil in the future will most likely be electric cars. The fact that electric cars may not help the environment is not believable to me.

A report has been released by a union of scientists that says the charging of battery packs in the Nissan Leaf and other battery power cars, may be releasing a lot of carbon into the atmosphere. The effect on the amount of greenhouse gases produced depends on the source of electricity charging it and the location. Although, the potential for electric cars to reduce greenhouse emissions is very high. According to the chief executive of Nissan and Renault, Carlos Ghosn, it is better to use electricity produced from coal than to use gasoline. The automotive industry must provide alternatives to oil-fueled engines, the report concluded.

I agree with you that charging electric cars does not give off a lot of carbon. This idea seems a little far fetched because the batteries, as far as I know, do not involve gas or gas exchange at all. The battery is just electrical so they are intended to protect the environment. I think the cars will do more good than harm. Green house emissions have been a hot topic lately, because of global warming and doing what we can to reduce them I think, would be beneficial. Also oil is a nonrenewable resource so we need to find something to replace it, which for cars could be electric cars.
ReplyDeletePretty ironic that a car that is trying to save the environment is releasing carbon into that atmosphere. But yes, I suppose it will be better in the long term and hopefully new technology will continue to lower the gas emissions. I think another thing that car companies should start thinking about is ways to build cars that can become more recyclable, in the end all the cars will eventually end up in a scrap heap and that will become a problem. Anyways, it's good to hear about any progress that electric cars are making because they will most likely be the future of transportation as far as I can see.
