Russian sports minister promises fight against fan racism ahead of 2018 World Cup


The Russian Sports Minister promises the country will work hard to reduce racism between the fans and the players before the 2018 World Cup. The Minister made his comments just days after a banana was thrown at Chris Samba, a Congolese defender who plays for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, after a match at Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday. It was the third such incident against Anzhi players in the past year. There is a racist trend taking place in Russia with black players or players from another country. Russia must shape up it's act if it is to host the World Cup. No plans were made from the Minister on how to reduce the racism yet.

My opinion on this article is that it is a shame that the 2018 World Cup has to be played in Russia. Russia does not deserve to host the World Cup, especially if racist issues are taking place on the field and between the fans. The World Cup comes only every 4 years and it's a time where the world unites to celebrate and play soccer, so why must it be in Russia? If the Russian Sports Minister is hoping to reduce the racism then he must start right away and have a plan on how to handle it or eliminate it's problems. Mostly to blame for this is the Russian Fan base for soccer. They have to be the worst fans in the world.

    I agree that the racism needs to stop in Russia before the World Cup starts, but I disagree in that I believe Russia does deserve to host the World Cup, like every nation deserves a chance (under most circumstances). The majority of the fans during the games will be from the nations that are playing, so racism will not be that big of a problem. The Russian Sports Minister definitely needs to start this plan to stop racism right away so nations participating in the 2018 World Cup will feel welcomed.
