Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers , earned his first win as a Texas Ranger, but issues of racism have overshadowed his impressive first game. Yu Darvish, a Japanese superstar recently signed with the Texas Rangers in the off-season to go play baseball. Although the MLB season has just started, racist moments have already started to take place for the young superstar. CNBC's Darren Rovell tweeted frequently on Monday night about the "Yu Dog," a new food introduced at Rangers Ballpark. The "Yu Dog" features a hotdog wrapped in deep fried wonton with a seaweed salad, fries in sesame seed oil, and a fortune cookie on the side. There were numerous photos of fans holding up racist signs welcoming Darvish to his first game as a Ranger. One particular sign read "We (Heart) Yu Long Time." Another photo showed fans wearing a traditional Japanese get-up. The Ranger Brodcasters as well were making some racist remarks towards Darvish like "They've hit a couple of balls hard. Smoak hit his line drive hard, Seager hit his ball pretty good and then there's been a couple of chinkers," Rangers analyst Tom Grieve said.
In my opinion, I think that Yu Darvish will just have to deal with the racisim. There is going to be plenty more as the season goes on and he just needs to ignore it and focus on baseball. It is such a disgrace to see Rangers fans act disrespectful towards Darvish. They think that the racist signs they hold up are funny but in reality they are very hurtful. Everybody knows that Yu Darvish is Japanese. We all get that so there is no need to repeat it by making signs and t-shirts. As for the "Yu Dog" I think that it is going way to far. The hotdog wrapped in deep fried wonton with a seaweed salad, fries in sesame seed oil, sounds pretty good but they really don't have to add a fortune cookie on the side. I just hope the Rangers got permission from Darvish to approve of the food. If not, then that just shows you how ignorant and racist people are these days. Finally, you would think that the Announcers would know better not to say the word "chinkers" especially when there was already an Innocent similar on Jeremy Lin at ESPN.
The website I got this article from is a new website called Sports&Stars. It seems the website has a numerous amount of publishers who could be either professional or just fans posting their ideas on sports. The website is biased because they could be anti-Rangers fans and could be making a big deal out of Texas Rangers fans actions to make them sound bad. Also, there seems to be many comments complaining how ridiculous the article is and how inaccurate the sources are. The article writer is John Talty who has had much experience, so I can also see the article a reliable source.
I dont think that its a sign of racism, I just think that a lot of people are just fascinated with his undoubted significant talent, and how fast he has blown up.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Darvish will have to learn how to deal with all the racism because it will continue to go on. He's not the first Japanese pitcher in the MLB and he's not going to be the first athlete to deal with racism either. I believe if Yu's performance on the field gets better and better, the fans will start to respect him more. If his performance is not the standard that the Ranger's fans expect, you could hear people saying that he was good in the Japan league, but he's not good enough to play in the MLB. I don't think Yu will get caught up in all the racism and he will focus on being an MLB player.
